From Joe Biden’s late decision to drop out of the race, to Donald Trump’s disastrous interview at the National Association for Black Journalists, to Kamala Harris choosing the folksy and relatively unknown Minnesota governor Tim Walz as her running mate, the 2024 election cycle has been – to say the least– unpredictable. For many in the Democratic establishment and farther left circles, however, these shake-ups have been refreshing and a hopeful sign that a Harris-Walz ticket may be more willing to listen to people’s concerns. Harris’ path to victory as a Black woman will not be easy, because Republicans are already tapping “into anti-Black stereotypes to spark disgust in the lizard part of the white brain” as Nicholas Powers explores in our August cover story.
