Farewell to the 2022 World Cup + New School Strike Victory
The World Cup concluded in Qatar today with Argentina defeating France in a championship thriller. The month-long tournament saw many displays of the “beautiful sport” at its best with close, hard-fought games, epic upsets and memorable goals by the world’s best players. At the same time, the Cup was played under the watchful eye of an absolute monarchy that criminalizes LGBTQ people and oversaw the deaths of hundreds of migrant laborers who built sparkling new stadiums in the desert. And it still may be far from the worst government to host the world’s most popular sports event as Steven Wishnia recalls here. Also, see Amba Guerguerian’s accompanying piece about the outsized role Palestine played in the 2022 World Cup even though it did not field a team.
