July Indypendent: Stop the Copaganda
Most of the media coverage the NYPD receives is deferential if not outright hero worship. Nonetheless, in the past year, the Boys in Blue have shifted their media posture to something far more disturbing and unhinged, as John Teufel describes in our July cover article, adding “It is still quite shocking to see the NYPD go full mask-off. It would seem unsustainable – even New York’s white liberals would like to pretend the police force is not a QAnon convention.”

Next Wednesday marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Eric Garner, a Staten Island man who was jumped by a half dozen police officers who allege he was illegally selling single cigarettes in public. Garner’s 11 cries of “I can’t breathe!” were recorded in a cell phone video taken by an onlooker. It was the first time we witnessed the explosive power of cell phone footage of a police murder being shared on social media. Years of protests over Garner’s death followed as did many other similar Black Lives Matter protests fueled by similarly awful videos.
