NY Voters Just Might Hand Governor’s Race to a Republican
New York voters haven’t elected a Republican governor since 2002. They repudiated Donald Trump by more than 20 points in both 2016 and 2020. Yet, polls have shown Trump acolyte Lee Zeldin steadily gaining on incumbent Democrat Kathy Hochul for the past month. In one poll over the weekend, he surpassed her. What gives? In his latest for The Indy, Theodore Hamm describes how Zeldin is tapping into racialized fears of crime and social disorder with great effect

Why is Zeldin’s demagogic messaging resonating so well in the New York City region? Mayor Eric Adams can take some of the credit. It’s Adams and his local media allies who have waged a relentless propaganda war over the past year and a half to scare the bejesus out of New Yorkers. As John Teufel wrote in our July cover article, “Once you teach humans to be scared — once you’ve done the hard work of unmooring the emotions of the populace from the conditions on the ground — it’s not so simple to un-flip that switch.”

Nicole Malliotakis is New York City’s only Republican congressperson. Elected in 2020, she quickly fell in line with Donald Trump’s Big Lie that his election was stolen. Running for re-election in a swing district that encompasses Staten Island and parts of South Brooklyn, she has Trump’s endorsement. She has also inspired a grassroots movement that is working furiously to derail their MAGA congresswoman from being elected.
