NY’s Crisis Pregnancy Centers Are Back in the News
Gov. Kathy Hochul nominated former prosecutor Hector LaSalle yesterday to be the new chief justice of the New York State Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court. LaSalle currently serves as a judge on Long Island. His history of anti-choice and anti-union decisions has sparked a rapid backlash to the selection. Seven Democratic state senators have already come out against LaSalle’s nomination, and more are expected to do so in the coming days.
One of LaSalle’s more infamous decisions barred state investigators looking into “crisis pregnancy centers” from reviewing “advertisements and promotional literature, brochures and pamphlets that the [center] provided or disseminated to the public” on First Amendment grounds — even though these documents were critical to determining whether the clinic falsely promoted its services as genuine medical care.
The whole point of these centers is to manipulate pregnant people into not having abortions when they may need them. For more about how pregnancy centers work, see our August cover story by Yastika Guru. In her field reporting, Yastika used urine collected from a pregnant woman to infiltrate three different clinics — two in Manhattan and one in the Bronx — and expose their practices.

Yes, I want to give to The Indypendent today!
The nomination of LaSalle is the latest disastrous move by Hochul and the New York Democrats. In last month’s Indy cover story by John Tarleton, we explored why the NY Democratic establishment is unable (and often unwilling) to fight for progressive principles and what can be done to counter its power.

Our Year-End Fund Drive
We need your help. No other city in the United States has a great leftist newspaper like The Indypendent providing insightful, hard-hitting local news coverage. But we can’t do this without your support. That’s why we have our annual fund drive at the end of each year. If we don’t raise the funds we need, we might have to suspend publication in early 2023. It’s that simple.
If you are still mulling in your mind, “Should I give to these guys?,” please see Jerry Meyer’s short essay on why he supported The Indy + some encouraging words from our Associate Editor Amba Guerguerian.
