Video: Indy Readers Describe Why They Support The Indy
It’s Giving Tuesday and your inbox is probably full by now with messages from organizations telling you why you should support them.
We could do the same. We could tell you about the stories we have broken in the past year, the movements we have amplified, the grassroots political candidates we have spotlighted, the talented young progressive journalists who have taken wing under our guidance. But on this day we want you to hear from other Indypendent readers about why they find this publication to be unique and worthy of their support.
We run on a shoestring budget and a lot of heart. Whatever contribution you can make will be a huge help, whether it’s a generous one-time donation, or if you become an Indy monthly sustainer and spread your support across the year.

And once you give to The Indy, please give to other organizations you think are doing great work. We all rise together.
One Indy reader who was passionate about supporting this publication and countless other progressive causes was Gerald “Jerry” Meyer. Jerry was a retired history professor at Hostos Community College in the South Bronx. As a young man, Jerry supported the causes he believed in when he barely had two nickels to rub together. He unexpectedly became rich later in life and freely shared his good fortune.
Jerry died last year at the age of 81. The Indypendent’s Editor-in-Chief John Tarleton wrote about Jerry’s rags-to-riches story and the conviction he lived by that the Left had to be self-funding and that everyone who identified with the Left’s values should do their part, large or small.
“Scraping by as an adjunct professor during his twenties, Jerry shoplifted his food when money got tight. But even then — he reminded me years later — he would set aside his extra nickels and dimes to send off small donations to causes and publications he believed in,” writes Tarleton.

A couple of years before he passed, Jerry wrote this short, eloquent piece about his motives for supporting The Indy.
