Welcoming Migrants Is an Act of Love
From the White House to Congress to New York City Hall, the leaders of both major political parties have adopted Donald Trump’s paranoid, immigrant bashing politics as their own because it’s “good politics.” Fortunately, ordinary New Yorkers are showing there’s another way.
Jess Beck saw shivering West African migrants at her neighborhood park and persuaded the non-profit theater troupe she volunteers with to open their space as a daytime shelter, setting in motion a wave of activism by her East Village neighbors who also wanted to get involved. In Washington Heights, Laura Kaplan opened her small apartment to a Honduran family of four. The “refugee crisis”, she says, is “an opportunity for our country to expand and grow, for us to make new friends, and to have workers to contribute to the economic success of all.

INDY KIDS
In 2005, we helped launch a children’s newspaper, indyKids, “a free paper for kids, by kids” that has since become its own organization. IndyKids has been an extraordinary success, publishing a newspaper and a podcast that cover the important issues of the day from a kid’s perspective. Many hundreds of young people have participated over the past two decades. In March, indyKids will be hosting another one of their semi-annual news writing workshops for aspiring kid reporters. If you have a child that is interested in writing about news and current events, this is a unique opportunity.
